The Susan Alden Award

The Alden Award endowment was established by College of Nursing alumna and dedicated Alumna Association Board Member, Susan Alden, DNP, FNP, APMHCNS, BC. Dr. Alden is board certified in both Family Practice Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing and taught nursing for nearly 30 years. She established this award to assist students enrolled in an advanced practice nursing program who have a desire to work with psychiatric-mental health patients.

Application Information

Selection for this award will be determined by the College of Nursing Scholarship Selection Committee.
The award will be given annually to a deserving student.

Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Be a currently enrolled Georgia Health Science University Nurse Practitioner (NP) student in good academic standing (any area of specialty)
  2.  Demonstrate the ability to provide superior mental health-psychiatric nursing care to clients in a primary care setting OR primary nursing care in the mental health-psychiatric setting.

  3.  Submit a CV highlighting employment or volunteer work with county mental health services or community based mental health programs.  Both nursing and non-nursing experience may be included.

  4.  Submit a one page paper on one of the following topics:

    • How a background in psychiatric/mental health nursing will impact the quality of care you will provide in a family nurse practice setting. OR
    • How a combined psychiatric/mental health family nursing practice will impact the future of your patient’s care and possibly the care of all patients’ care.
  5. Submit one recommendation from a GRU faculty member using the Scholarship Recommendation Cover Sheet and Scholarship Recommendation Form.

2.      How a combined psychiatric/mental health family nursing practice will impact the future of your patient’s care and possibly the care of all patients’ care.

5.      Submit one letter of recommendation from a GHSU faculty member

Expectation of the Recipient

1.      The student recipient must write and mail a thank you note to Dr. Alden.
