"We have the opportunity to create something special at GHSU with the new dental school - something all of us who care for patients could be proud of, now and in the future."

Currently, gifts and pledges toward the support of the More Than a Building Imperative are at $ 8.8 million  . We would like to thank our committed alumni and friends for supporting Georgia's only dental school.

Our # 1 priority – a new building to house the school – is moving forward in the initial stages of fundraising. In 2008, Gov. Sonny Perdue approved our $75 million funding request for the building, and now we are working toward identifying additional fundingresources. Groundbreaking on the new building was held September 30, 2009. Excitement was in the air as the shovels hit the ground. The new facility incorporating the latest technology to deliver didactic and clinical programs will be state-of-the-art.  As has been stated many times before, we need a facility that will reflect the quality of our faculty, staff and students.

Among the many contributions and gifts, GHSU College of Dental Medicine received its second-largest gift to date. The Dental Practice Group of the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine donated $1 million toward construction of a new dental school facility.  The Dental Practice Group is comprised of 65 dental school faculty members who treat private patients in the dental school. The group's facilities in the new building will be in a prominent, ground-floor location with a separate entrance to ease patient access.

"The practicing faculty wants to support the future of dentistry in Georgia, and this gift shows our commitment," says Dr. Travis Smith, Dental Practice Group board president and assistant professor of general dentistry. "The atmosphere of the new facility will be better for teaching and individual patient care, and we are excited to help the growth and expansion of the school." When a development officer calls to tell you about everything going on at the school, we hope you will be as pleased to see us as we are to see you. It is a genuine pleasure to meet so many dentists who share such a devotion to their alma mater. Thank you again for your continued generosity – and for helping us remain a school you can take pride in.

Building a Bridge to the Future

It was a simple friendship that launched the altruism of one of the Georgia Health Sciences University’s most loyal supporters.

Dr. Emile Fisher, who earned his dental degree from Emory University in 1952 and his master’s degree in periodontics from Northwestern University College of Dental Medicine in 1956, had begun a thriving periodontics practice in Atlanta when he met Dr. Judson C. Hickey. Dr. Hickey had just been named dean of a fledgling dental school at the Georgia Health Sciences University, and he had his work cut out for him.
