Background

In 2004, the Georgia Health Sciences University in association with the GHSU Health System, Inc. established the GHSU Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (CPFCC) to promote active partnerships among patients, their families and healthcare providers in the giving and receiving of healthcare services. 

The Center helps integrate a patient- and family-centered approach into academic education and research.   

The work of our nationally recognized Center is reaping benefits. Improved safety, increased patient satisfaction and staff retention are directly attributed to our embodiment of a more patient- and family-centered focus among hospital units and clinics at the Medical College of Georgia.

The capacity to work in such a way that the diverse views of participants in any given issue are embraced, considered and reflected in the solution.

Empowerment

Every individual participating in a health care experience including caregivers, patients and family
members should be strengthened by the process and enabled in the use of their knowledge and skills.

Respect

Individuals including patients, families and health professionals demonstrate consideration for the viewpoints, backgrounds and knowledge of others working in non-hierarchical systems.

Flexibility

The ability to plan and deliver evidence-based health care that also reflects individualized needs and preferences.

Information sharing

The willingness to provide information with sufficient detail to meet requested or anticipated needs in ways that are supportive and helpful.

Discovery and Learning

Development occurs through rigorous scholarship and creativity permitting continuous advancement and growth.
