The People Who Make Clinical Trials Happen

Before researchers propose a new procedure or drug for use on humans, it must be tested, first in the laboratory, then with animal models. When it is accepted for testing on humans, it enters a clinical trial.

Clinical trials revolve around patients and doctors working together to investigate the effects of new treatments.

All new treatments are administered according to Good Clinical Practice standards. These standards require that clinical studies have a written plan, called a protocol. The plan must state:

    • The goal of the study
    • A description of the disease to be treated
    • A health profile of a patient who is eligible for the study
    • What prior treatments are acceptable
    • A description of dosing, including method, amount and scheduling
    • The guidelines for measuring the effects of the new drug
    • The guidelines for reporting the results
      • NOTE: Before a protocol is implemented at GHSU, it must be reviewed and approved by an ethics panel, called the Human Assurance Committee.

The Clinical Trials Office manages all legal and financial matters related to conducting the clinical trial.

Physicians on Multidisciplinary Teams accept the patients into study trials and provide ongoing medical care and supervision. They meet regularly as a group to review each patient's progress.

The Business of Making a Trial Possible

When an institution opens a clinical trial, it incurs financial and legal obligations. The Clinical Trials Office at The GHSU Cancer Center is responsible for compliance with internal policies and procedures, clinical trial contracts and other external requirements.

The office's goal is to open as many cutting-edge Phase I translational clinical trials as we can handle.

The office ensures that the necessary personnel, space, supplies and equipment needed to execute a trial are available and then follows up with procurement and scheduling. It also tracks how the material and employee hours are used.
