What We Do

The mission of the Board of Visitors (BOV) for Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) is to serve as external advisors to the President of GHSU in a number of areas, including but not limited to, strategic planning, economic development and community relations. Service on the BOV will naturally seek to inspire a regional and global view of the challenging health care landscape and approach to granting support for GHSU. At the same time, the unique perspective and counsel the BOV members bring to GHSU will also be important to raising additional funds to support the work of GHSU.

Responsibilities

Provide input, perspective and counsel to the President of GHSU on emerging issues and topics.

Inform and advise on important issues such as the economy, innovation and technology.

Provide advice on strategies and tactics to maintain and elevate GHSU’s standing among the premier health sciences universities in America.

Serve as advocates for GHSU in achieving its educational, clinical and research purposes.

  • Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center performed the first convergent Ex-Maze Procedure in the State to correct atrial fibrillation
  • has the region's only Level I trauma center, one of five in the state of Georgia

  • is one of only two accredited Sleep Disorders Center in the region

  • is the area's only accredited Adult Transesophageal Echocardiography Laboratory by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories, one of 1,000 in the UnitedStates, Canada, and Puerto Rico
  • is the only Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant program in the region and was named a network transplant center by the National Marrow Donor Program, which allows doctors to transplant using unrelated donors from the national registry
  • offers the only pediatric oncology/ hematology services in the region
  • is the only Pediatric Emergency Department and Level 1 (highest level) Pediatric Trauma Center, with air and ground transportation in region
  • is the only Gamma Knife Facility in the region
  • GHSU has a $2.1 billion direct annual economic impact – returning $14 for every $1 of state funds invested in the enterprise
  • GHSU is the second largest employer in the CSRA 31, one of the Top 20 largest employers in Georgia
  • GHSU directly employs approximately 10,000 employees and generates approximately 50,000 other jobs statewide
  • GHSU has long-standing partnerships with the State for the care of correctional, veteran, and behavioral/mental health patients in Georgia
